Five Spice Hoisin Ribs
To make these Hoisin Ribs "on the grill" we use a hybrid method of oven cooking and
grilling. These ribs not hard to make although they do require quite a bit of prep and cooking time. Start early
and finish them at the Barbeque Party and your guests will love you.
The combination of oven cooking and finishing on the grill creates a fall off the bone rib
with juicy meat and a sticky outside coating and skin that snaps when you bite into it.
Five Spice Hoisin Ribs
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 pounds Pork Spare Ribs, cut into single ribs
- 1 tablespoon 5-Spice Powder (find this in the spice aisle of larger supermarkets or
an Asian Grocery)
- Salt & Pepper
For the Sauce
- 3 tablespoons Peanet Oil
- 2 teaspoons grated Ginger
- 2 Garlic Cloves, crushed
- 1/4 cup of Hoisin Sauce
- 2 tablespoons Soy Sauce
- 2 tablespoons Sweet Chili Pepper Sauce
- 1/4 cup Honey
- 1/3 cup light Brown Sugar
- 1/3 cup Dry Sherry
Directions
- Preheat oven to 275 F
- Rub the ribs with the five-spice powder and season with the salt &
pepper
- Place in a non-stick roasting pan (or two if needed) and cover tightly with
foil.
- Cook in oven for 1 hour
- Heat oil in a wok or pan over medium high heat
- Add ginger and garlic and fry for one minute
- Add remaining sauce ingredients
- Remove ribs from oven and toss with sauce until coated evenly
- Return to oven and cook covered for 45 more minutes
- Remove from oven and hold until ready to place on grill
- Cook the ribs over low to medium fire for about 30 minutes taking care not to burn
the sugars with flareups. By the time you place them on the grill the ribs should be just about done cooking
and you are just finishing them. About 30 - 30 minutes should do the trick.
