Honey BBQ Jerky

Honey Barbeque Beef Jerky - Making Your Very Own Honey BBQ Jerky
By Caleb Liu There are certain flavors that just go together, peanut butter and chocolate for example. Another combination of flavors that makes a perfectly happy marriage is honey and barbecue.

These two flavors have created an uproar in the kitchen with chefs churning out by the masses menu items featuring items drenched in honey barbecue sauce: wings, burgers, steaks, chicken breasts, chicken strips, ribs and more. But the honey barbecue sauce can also make for a very good dry treat!

Honey barbecue beef jerky is a popular homemade jerky flavor to make. Sure, there are plenty of honey barbecue sauces available on grocery store shelves from brands like Ken’s, Heinz and Kikomon. But, there are also some sweet and tangy recipes for a honey barbecue marinade that is perfect for slapping on beef jerky. Here is one that we found and enjoy:

Honey BBQ Jerky

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup Honey
  • 1/2 cup Ketchup
  • 1/4 cup Butter (1/2 stick)
  • 1 tablespoon Vinegar
  • 2 teaspoon Dijon Mustard
  • 2 tablespoon Brown Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce
  • 1 clove Garlic, put through a press
  • Chili Powder, optional, to taste
  • 1 pound of good Beef

Directions:

1. Slice meat in thin strips.
2. In a bowl, combine all ingredients of marinade and mix well.
3. Simmer ingredients for about five minutes. Let cool.
4. Place meat 3-4 layers deep in a container, spooning sauce mixture over each layer.
5. Cover tightly and marinate 6-12 hours in the refrigerator, stirring occasionally.
6. Layout on trays, 24 to 36 hours in dehydrator (or follow directions for oven).

When done, the honey barbecue flavor will have been absorbed in every thread of the meat, giving the jerky a lovely blend of that honey barbecue taste our tastebuds have grown to like.

Not sure that you can make it on your own?  Visit Caleb’s site.

The Jerky Outlet offers an amazing honey barbecue turkey jerky. This is a little different than beef jerky, as it is more of a stick snack, which will need to be refrigerated once open. There is more of a honey flavor than barbecue to it. The jerky is also very soft and a little juicy since it is more of a snack stick, and that can be a nice break from the chewy jerky. This is a very good product and comes in a one pound package for $16.99. So it is a little on the pricey side. Try making your own!

Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Sitting here adding pages to the websites I usually play music.  Typically I will switch between artists on my collection of MP3’s — one after another, whatever strikes my fancy.

Today I uploaded two new pages — in Weekend Party Drinks I added a quick recipe for Sweet and Sour (Homemade is FAR superior to the store bought schlock) and on my Tradition Cocktails Squidoo Page I added a Classic Pina Colada Recipe (The Squidoo page is what we call a “feeder” page.  It’s designed to introduce people to The Weekend Grillers.  Do me a favor — if you get a chance CLICK HERE and visit it.  Give it a rank and maybe a comment.  Every “bump” up in rank can get us more Weekend Grillers to join in the fun.  Thank you.)

Back to the music — today instead of flipping through dozens of songs, I put on Blood Sugar Sex Magik by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.   I had forgotten just how good this album is.  They were at the absolute height of their powers here.  The tracks are well known to anyone who listened to the radio or went to bars in the ’90’s — The Power Of Equality, Breaking The Girl, Funky Monks, Suck My Kiss, Give It Away, Under The Bridge – but the best song on the album is a salute to one of my favorite cities on Earth, New OrleansApache Rose Peacock.

“Yes, my favorite place to be,
Is not a land called Honah Lee.
Mentally or physically,
I wanna be in New Orleans.”

Wish I was there right now.

Super Complicated Recipe — But You Can Do It!

We’ve put a new recipe up on The Weekend Grillers from the Omaha Steaks people.
Seared Filet Mignon Steaks with Maytag Blue Cheese Butter and Red Wine Sauce is super complicated — but it is Super GOOD.  And the instuctions from Omaha Steaks are very good.  You should be about to do it and it WILL impress people.  Try it.

Got a good mention on Digg for the New Weekend Movie Section.  If you have just a second or two help us get the word out by CLICKING HERE and giving us a Digg (Click on the “Digg” button to the left of the article.   Thanks.

Adult Party Ideas — Yeah, We Got ‘Em!

PART THREE

In Part One of this post we talked about how crappy most adult party websites are and in Part Two we talked about how we really party today.

In this part we look at what The Weekend Grillers have in store for the future.

Three Sections are Just the Beginning

Recently The Weekend Grillers added 3 new Adult Party Sections to the website.  These sections concentrate on Drinks, Dips & Salsa and Movies.  They come from an abandoned idea I had to create a site dedicated to the way that mature adults like to party — not silly games and costumes as so many websites seem to think but Good Friends, Good Food, Good Drinks and Good Times.

If you read part 2, you saw that when I started creating my Adult Party Site, I created several different sections.  Drinks, Dips & Salsa and Movies are just the three that were the most nearly ready and were the easiest to include when I moved The Weekend Grillers to the new site.

We have many more sections that we plan to include in the future — including Appetizers, Desserts, Good Party Games (no Big Toe Game here), Camping,  Weekend Get-Aways and MORE — to make The Weekend Grillers a TRUE adult party site.

Even the three that we put up are not close to being done (notice that there are no movies past “P”.)  Look for many more movie programs, drink recipes and dip and salsa ideas.

Are You Too Old To Party?

PART TWO

Yesterday we talked about how the three new Party Sections of The Weekend Grillers came to be, how I hate to let anything go to waste and how some people like to compare their big toes.

Today we talk more about how Adults REALLY Party

If You Do It Right, Partying is Better When You Get Older

A few months back, one of my younger friends, Mandy,  told me that she was glad to see how my friends and I still liked to party and enjoy ourselves — because we were her parents’ age and they didn’t do anything!

After I recovered from this “compliment”, I told her that in my opinion, if you do it right, partying is BETTER when you get older.  My friends and I still do many of the same things we did as teenagers and 20 year olds, we just do them better.

When we were young a party food usually consisted of 20 bags of chips and a refrigerator full of cheap beer.   Now we have a table full of Smoked Salmon, Roasted Peppers (Atomic Buffalo Turds), Green Chili Wontons and more and, while the refrigerator is still full of beer, it’s now Sam Adams and Blue Moon.

We use to cram 80 people into a 2 room apartment with no A/C.  We now have kitchens bigger than that.

We very seldom have anyone drink too much and pass out on the bathroom floor – but if they do, we take care of them (we’re Mommies and Daddies after all) and the bathroom floor is clean.

We use to listen to really bad ’80’s Rock and…okay, no one is perfect.  We still listen to really bad ’80’s Rock.

Party!!!

I could go on and I’m sure you have some good stories and ideas, but the point is, The Weekend Grillers is designed for the way we REALLY Party today.  Always has been.  Not funny costumes and silly games.  Just Good Friends, Good Food, Good Drinks and Good Times.

So what better place to include Adult Party Ideas and Recipes – even if they don’t necessarily include the Grill?

Join us tomorrow for Part 3 of this Post.

The True Adult Party Site — The Weekend Grillers

PART ONE

Recently, when we moved to our new, beautiful Web 2.0 Website, The Weekend Grillers added three new sections to the site — Weekend Drinks, Dips and Salsa and Movie Night Movies.  These areas have many new and exciting party ideas and recipes and should add to the enjoyment of your next BBQ Party or Cookout.

But what are they doing on a Barbeque Site?

An Adult Party Site?  Not this Adult!

Shortly after we started The Weekend Grillers, I was searching the web for ideas and came across a site that claimed to have “Adult Party Games.”  (Adult as in “mature” — not “sexual”.  Nothing wrong with those — it just wasn’t what I was looking for.  That day. ;)

I clicked on the link and the first game I saw was called “The Big Toe Game“

Here’s how you play it (YOU!  Not me!)  You ask your guests to pull off their shoes and socks.  Then everyone compares big toes.  You give prizes for the longest, hairiest and, I’m not making this up, the most sock lint.

Now I don’t know about you, but if I’m at a party and someone suggests The Big Toe Game, I’m outta there.  I don’t even think massive amounts of beer would make this fun.

Needless to say, I didn’t read any further.

I did research the subject further though (adult parties not big toes ;) ) and found very little on the web that resembled how my friends and I ACTUALLY party.

We’ve Grown Up — But We Haven’t Grown Old

Every site I went to seemed to think that my friends and I like to play silly games or dress up like TV Characters.  Sure, these things might be fun occasionally, but for most of our parties we don’t play Pin the G-String on the Stripper or come dressed as Skipper and Little Buddy.

Most of our parties consist of Good Friends, Good Food, Good Drink and Good Conversation.  We often “build” the party around a reason — such as The Superbowl or Fourth of July – but the main attraction is just getting together and enjoying each others’ company.

So I set out to make a REAL Adult Party Site.

So What Happened and Where Is It?

I quickly realized two things — the web already has a lot of party sites (even if they weren’t very good) and I had bitten off a little more than I could chew.

I start creating sections on Drinks, Dips & Appetizers, Movies (look familiar?), Appetizers, Good Games, Desserts and More.  It wasn’t long before I was completely overwhelmed by the task and just gave up.

The pages I had completed sat on my harddrive for months until I finally realized a third thing:

I ALREADY had a TRUE Adult Party Site – THE WEEKEND GRILLERS.

Come Back Tomorrow for Part 2 of this Post where we learn if we are Too Old to Party.

Why Did The Weekend Grillers Move?

Welcome to the NEW Weekend Grillers Blog.

This is a companion to The New and Improved Weekend Grillers Site which can be found at TheWeekendGrillers.com

I will be explaning what you can expect from this blog and what we have planned in the next few posts — but lets get the big question out of the way first.

Why has The Weekend Grillers Moved?

I gave you a few reasons why The Weekend Grillers moved on the old site and in my emails to some of you — but here is a slightly more detailed explanation for anyone who may be interested.

I am sure that is the question on many of your minds. Trust me, Jamie and I (this is Mark writing this) agonized over this decision for many weeks. But we eventually decided it was the right thing to do and the right time to do it.

There are many good reasons NOT to move such as:

  • The size of the website — moving all the pages will take several weeks,
  • We have spent over a year building up a brand and many, MANY links to the old site, all of which will either have to be updated or will stop working,
  • We will lose many casual readers who haven’t visited in a while and won’t be able to find the site.

But even with those very real facts there is ONE very good reason we decided to move:

We want to build a real community of BBQ lovers and Weekend Grillers and we just didn’t feel like we could do it on the old site.

I won’t bore you with the technical details, but the new site is built on a platform that will allow us to do SOOOO much more.

The NEW and IMPROVED Weekend Grillers

Below are just a few of the updates you can look forward to. I will go into each of them more in the upcoming weeks right here on this blog so check back often. Some are already up and running and some are on the way.

You’re looking at the BIG ONE. The ability to include Blogs and Forums is the biggest reason we moved. Traditional sites are great, but NOTHING builds community like the back and forth you can get on a Blog or Forum. Watch for addition Blogs including Recipe and Technique specific ones.

RSS feeds and Social Bookmarking - Don’t worry if you don’t know what they are — They’re not necessary to enjoy The Weekend Grillers. But if you do want ‘em — We got ‘em!

True Mobile Access - You’ve always been able to pull up The Weekend Grillers on an internet-ready phone or PDA — Only now it will look really good! Click HERE to learn all about using WEEKEND GRILLERS TO GO.

Comments on (Almost) Every Page - You can now comment directly on the page as you read it. You also have the ability to reply to other comment and even carry on an (almost) real-time conversation.

And much, MUCH MORE!

Check out the new site and let us know what you think. There’s a comment box on the first page. ;)

Mark

PS — If you are still interested in the workings and marketing decisions that went into this, feel free to ask any questions you have and I will try and answer them.  It’s not a secret, I just don’t think that most people care to read all the gory details.
